Maui first graders rally around the new girl!

Posted on Jun 07, 2018 by Erica Parkerson

As soon as her classmates see Alexis's car pull up at school, they begin jumping for joy and shouting:  "Alexis is here! Alexis is here!"

The star of the first grade class in Maui can't speak, but she does love to hand out Hawaiian leis to her new friends. They've embraced Alexis.

All of this is a remarkable answer to her mom's prayers.  Alexis has a very rare genetic condition, and while she's eight years old, she appears like she's three. Enrolling her daughter in school was a big step for Vanessa. She feared Alexis would be bullied, but the exact opposite has happened. She's so happy and so are many others.

"I think it gives people hope,” her mama says.

Pomaikai Elementary School just broke their tradition of naming one Student of the Month, and recognized FIVE students in one month for their kindness toward Alexis.
