Community Heartbeat:
Pawmetto Lifeline
Each year, over $3 million in taxpayer dollars are spent in efforts to manage the homeless pet population. Yet for decades, these efforts often meant euthanizing thousands of healthy, adoptable animals. In 1999, when Pawmetto Lifeline was founded, more than 26,000 dogs and cats entered municipal shelters in Lexington and Richland Counties annually—96% of whom were euthanized simply due to a lack of education and resources.
Determined to break this tragic cycle, the founders of Pawmetto Lifeline believed there had to be a better way. They envisioned a community where the lives of homeless pets were valued and protected—not ended.
Pawmetto Lifeline's mission is clear: To create a community in which no healthy, adoptable pet dies because it is homeless. This mission fuels their every effort to bring meaningful, lasting change to the Midlands region.
More than just a shelter, Pawmetto Lifeline aims to shape a better society by addressing quality-of-life issues through collaboration and education. Their vision is to create a better humanity—one in which compassion for animals reflects a more just and caring community.
- Youth Volunteer Programs for those in need
- Courage to advocate for positive change
- Partnerships with individuals and organizations committed to a no-kill philosophy
Unlike other animal welfare efforts, Pawmetto Lifeline implements a comprehensive strategy to end pet homelessness. Their work extends beyond sheltering pets—it includes:
- Education to promote responsible pet ownership
- Legislation to support humane animal policies
- Adoptions to place pets in loving homes
- An aggressive spay/neuter program to prevent future overpopulation
Thanks to these initiatives, the community is being transformed. Citizens are empowered to care for pets responsibly, and millions of dollars in public spending can be redirected toward other quality-of-life improvements in the Midlands.
Pawmetto Lifeline is more than a shelter—it’s a movement of compassion, commitment, and community. Together, we can ensure that every pet in the Midlands has a chance to live, love, and be loved. To learn more or get involved, visit PawmettoLifeline.org.
